Crispy and Quick, Guilt-free Air Fried French Dip

The French dip sandwich originated in Los Angeles in the early 1900s. Two rival restaurants, Philippe’s and Cole’s, both claim to have invented it. The story goes that a customer at Philippe’s requested his sandwich to be dipped in beef juices to soften the bread. This became a popular item on the menu and was named the French dip sandwich. Over the years, the sandwich has become a staple in American cuisine and has been adapted in various ways, including this air fryer version.

A delicious twist on the classic French dip sandwich, made in the air fryer for a healthier and easier version. Tender roast beef, melted cheese, and onions are sandwiched between toasted rolls and served with a flavorful dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb deli roast beef

  • 4 soft rolls

  • 1/2 cup beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 4 slices provolone cheese

Directions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
  • Slice the roast beef into thin strips.
  • Cut the rolls in half and place them in the air fryer for 2 minutes to lightly toast.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
  • Dip the strips of roast beef into the broth mixture, making sure they are fully coated.
  • Place the coated beef strips in the air fryer and cook for 5 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • While the beef is cooking, place the sliced onions in the air fryer for 2 minutes to lightly cook.
  • Once the beef is done, remove it from the air fryer and place it on the bottom half of the toasted rolls.
  • Top the beef with the cooked onions and a slice of provolone cheese.
  • Place the sandwiches back in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese.
  • Serve the French dip sandwiches with the remaining broth mixture on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Make sure to preheat the air fryer before beginning the recipe.
  • You can use any type of roast beef, but thinly sliced deli roast beef works best for this recipe.
  • For a crispier roll, you can toast them for an extra minute before adding the beef.
  • You can also add some sliced bell peppers or mushrooms to the air fryer for extra flavor and texture.
