Crispy and Quick, Guilt-free Air Fried Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are a popular dish in the Southern United States, typically made by coating slices of unripe green tomatoes in cornmeal and frying them in oil. The dish gained widespread popularity after being featured in the novel and film ‘Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’. This air fried version offers a healthier alternative to the traditional fried method.

A healthier twist on a classic Southern dish, these air fried fried green tomatoes are crispy, tangy and delicious. Perfect as an appetizer or side dish, these tomatoes are easy to make and full of flavor.


  • 4 green tomatoes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • Cooking spray


  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Cut the tomatoes into 1/4 inch slices.
  • In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  • In another shallow dish, beat the eggs.
  • Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow dish.
  • Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, then the eggs, and finally the breadcrumbs, making sure to coat evenly.
  • Place the coated tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  • Spray the tomatoes with cooking spray.
  • Air fry for 5 minutes, then flip the tomatoes and spray with more cooking spray.
  • Air fry for an additional 5 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
  • Serve hot with ranch or remoulade sauce for dipping.


  • Make sure to use firm green tomatoes for best results
  • Adjust the cooking time according to the thickness of the tomatoes
  • Serve with a side of ranch or remoulade sauce for dipping
