Crispy and Quick, Guilt-free Air Fried Toasted Chiles

Chiles have been a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine for centuries, and toasting them is a common technique used to enhance their flavor. Traditionally, chiles were toasted over an open flame, but with the invention of air fryers, this process has become much easier and quicker. Air frying the chiles also results in a crispy texture, making them perfect for topping dishes or using as a garnish.

Ingredients

  • Dried chiles (such as guajillo, ancho, or pasilla)

Directions

  • Rinse the dried chiles and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  • Place the chiles in the air fryer basket and cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Remove the chiles from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes.
  • Once cooled, remove the stems and seeds from the chiles.
  • Cut the chiles into thin strips and place them in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  • Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the chiles are crispy and toasted.
  • Remove the chiles from the air fryer and let them cool before using in your desired recipe.

Notes

  • Be sure to keep an eye on the chiles while they are cooking as they can burn easily.
  • Adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of the chiles and your desired level of crispiness.
  • Toasting the chiles in an air fryer eliminates the need for oil, making this a healthier option compared to traditional frying methods.
